Internet of Things will drive biometrics into mainstream, says Ping Identity: 2015 Tech Predictions

In 2015, the cloud will eclipse legacy infrastructure and context-driven security will take center stage. Also, biometrics will go mainstream and natural user interfaces (UIs) will evolve at a fast rate, driven by the Internet of Things (IoT). This is all according to Andre Durand, CEO of Ping Identity Corporation, a provider of single sign-on and identity management software.

Durand’s predictions about emerging technologies are all part of our second annual Technology Predictions series in which industry experts share their predictions with us about the hot tech trends that they think will take center stage in 2015. We’ll be sharing all of their predictions with you over the next couple of days. Read on for more from Durand.SiliconANGLE 2015 Predictions Enterprise Emerging Technologies graphic

Prediction No. 1: The cloud will eclipse legacy infrastructure

2015 will be the year that Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) takes off in the enterprise in a big way. Currently, 84 percent of business apps are run in the enterprise data center. 2015 will be the year that those remaining non-Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) apps will begin to move to the cloud. With the move, legacy infrastructure will be left behind.

Prediction No. 2: Context-driven security will take center stage

Mobile telco operators will begin to take identity seriously, providing consumer and business identity services in a major way. As “trust” and “identity” are redefined around activities instead of around device and profiles, context will no longer be seen as supplementing active logins. Instead, active logins will be seen as supplementing passive and continuous authentication.

.

Prediction No. 3: Password technology will grow up

Smartphone multifactor authentication will take a big bite out of tokens and fobs—which are the old kludgy typewriter of authentication. The “something you know, something you have” paradigm will retire, as authentication success will go beyond a stateless, one or two-factor model into many factors collaborating.

.

Prediction No. 4: The IoT will become the Identity of Things

Biometrics will go mainstream and natural UIs will evolve at a fast rate, driven by the IoT. Consistent user experience (UX) for binding identities to things will be more and more recognized as critical for usability and meaningful consent.
