Ringly scores $5.1M to add smart bling to your life

Smart jewelry start-up Ringly has raised $5.1 million in Series A funding led by venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz.  New investors to the party included High Line Ventures and Silas Capital. Earlier investors, who took part in Ringly’s $1 million seed round in August 2013, included First Round Capital, Social+Capital, Mesa+, BBV and PCH. To date the company has raised $6.1 million.

The $5.1 million will go to expanding the Ringly collection and adding new features. In order to create a wider range of designs they will also look at partnering with designers and fashion brands.

Ringly has a range of smart rings that are available for preorder. The “Launch” collection are 18-karat matte gold rings with a 3 micron plated setting. They feature precious and semi-precious stones, including Black Onyx, Pink Sapphire, Rainbow Moonstone and Emerald. The “Limited” collection is crafted with a rhodium plated setting and comes with a tourmalated quartz semi-precious stone.

Once you have connected your ring to your smartphone via Bluetooth you can be alerted about a variety of notifications. You can customize how you want to receive alerts. A blinking light can alert you to notifications, or alternatively choose from four different vibration patterns.

The ring can alert you about messages, phone calls, calendar events or emails. You can also receive alerts from a variety of Android and iOS apps including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat, Uber, Tinder, Pinterest and LinkedIn. You can also customize which app notifications you want to receive or the fact that you only want to receive a notification if a specific person is phoning you, like the babysitter.

When your ring requires charging you can simply drop it back into its box.

All rings cost $195 except for the Emerald version, which is $260.

Ringly, an idea dreamed up by co-founder and CEO Christina Mercando, launched in April 2013. Mercando, who used to work as a Senior Product and Design Manager at eBay, says “We began with fashion first, and technology at the core. This required us to concentrate heavily on the miniaturization of our electronics upfront. It was no easy task — and took a lot of deep technical and manufacturing expertise that is invisible to our ring wearers — but we ended up with a lot of specialized knowledge as well as a set of ecosystem relationships that made our vision real.”

Preorders started on June 2014 and the original sales goal was $60,000. The goal was smashed in 8 hours and they went on to make $100,000 in the first 24 hours.

You can purchase your ring on the Ringly site. Shipping starts in spring. Bloomingdale’s and Shopbop will also carry the range later this year.
