Blizzard’s virtual pet goat raises $1.9 million for Ebola charity
During December 2014, World of Warcraft players raised $1.9 million by buying a special charity pet in game.
Agri, a $10 blue goat stylized after the draenei race from the game, went on sale December 3rd and December 31st last year. 100 percent of the $10 price-tag went to the Red Cross.
Blizzard Entertainment announced the amount with glee in a recent blog post: “Thanks to the overwhelming generosity of World of Warcraft players around the world who purchased the Argi pet, we’ve raised a total of more than $1.9 million USD to support the ongoing Ebola relief efforts in Africa by the Red Cross.”
The charity pet was initially announced at Blizzard’s conference BlizzCon in November 2014.
Although World of Warcraft players already pay up to $15 a month as a subscription fee, Blizzard has shown in the past that the game’s players are willing to go all out for the cute. WoW players made Blizzard $2 million in four hours for the $25 Celestial Steed (aka Sparklepony) mount.
Knowing this, Blizzard has used this amazing money-making power for charity in the past with the Cinder Kitten—a small fiery cat pet—during 2012, which netted the company $2.3 million for the Red Cross relief efforts for Superstorm Sandy victims.
