Samsung Galaxy S6 may come with wireless charging

samsung inviteSamsung Co. Ltd.’s latest flagship model the Galaxy S6 may come with wireless charging when it’s launched next month at the Mobile World Congress (MWC.)

Samsung engineer Seho Park took to Samsung’s Official Global Blog to talk wireless charging, complete with the history of the technology behind wireless charging, and naturally Samsung’s involvement its development.

The post noted that there were three groups working towards ubiquitous wireless charging, the Wireless Power Consortium (WPC), and its Qi standard, the Power Matters Alliance (PMA) and the Alliance for Wireless Power (A4WP), and that Samsung is a member of all three groups.

Park then highlighted Samsung’s history in delivering wireless charging solutions, starting in 2011 with the  first commercial wireless charging pad for Droid Charge (SCH-i510) in the U.S., and that it had since provided wireless charging covers and pads as a core accessory alongside many of their flagship smartphones such as the Galaxy S4 and Galaxy Note 3 in 2013 and the Galaxy S5 and Galaxy Note 4 last year.

Strong hints for the S6

The strongest hint that wireless charging may ship as default with the Galaxy S6 came in a later paragraph, that argued that “2015 will be a landmark year for the growth of wireless charging deployment” and that “Samsung will accelerate to democratize this wireless charging technology with compelling smartphones.”

The money quote: “With our upcoming Galaxy smartphones, users will be able to enter a new wireless world like never before.”

Wireless charging will be one of a range of new features Samsung will likely offer with its flagship Galaxy S6. As we’ve covered previously it will possibly be offered in a curved screen version, or as a later report claimed a “three side display” with “the future of camera’s.” We know for sure that it will offer a new Samsung designed chip, and will likely come with a metal backing, a change for a company who tends to prefer plastic backing for its phones.

While not all rumors can naturally be confirmed, the leaks and speculation point to an exciting new offering from Samsung after a rather muted response to its S5 model.

The phone is due to be revealed March 1st.
