Tamr wants to disrupt the data lake with its upgraded information unification platform

TamrA promising startup called Tamr, Inc. managed to stand out from the crowd at Strata + Hadoop World 2015 with a new release of its data unification platform that offers to deliver on the elusive promise of integrated analytics, a term that’s frequently used but rarely delivered upon.

There are countless data processing solutions possessing the ability to tap into external sources, with SAP SA having added another to the pile only a few days ago, but that connectivity is often limited in scope. And with manual integration usually off the table due to the sheer variety of systems scattered throughout the average enterprise, piecing together a complete picture of the situation is often prohibitively difficult.

That limits the perspective of business workers and hinders their ability to make decisions as a result, a challenge that puts the majority of large organizations with large piles of historic data locked away in existing infrastructure at a disadvantage compared to their younger rivals. Tamr offers to level the playing field with a fresh approach that harnesses machine learning to connect the dots.

The startup’s namesake platform hooks up to data sources using built-in connectors and performs the analytic world’s equivalent of an inventory to organize the contents into logical buckets that are then synchronized with information from other systems. The end-result is a full and continuously updated index of the information in the environment that a user can search for all the details associated with a certain entity such a particular customer.

The new version of the software that Tamr is showcasing at Strata + Hadoop World directly exposes the data catalog so that a high-level decision maker like a CIO can have a truly complete view of the data in their organizations. The release also introduces enhanced connectivity that can match relationships among disparate objects more effectively and works better with Hadoop, Oracle and popular analytics tools.

The platform effectively realizes the vision of the “data lake” – a centralized repository of an company’s information providing a unified picture of business – but in a way that is actually feasible for traditional organizations to implement. The value proposition has unsurprisingly struck a chord in the enterprise, with Tamr revealing the addition of GE, F. Hoffmann-La Roche AG and Toyota Motor Europe as customers against the backdrop of the launch.

The corporate giants join existing users such as Novartis International AG, Gloria Jeans Corp. and business information giant Thomson Reuters. The client list is especially impressive in view of the fact that Tamr only exited stealth less than a year ago, which signals even stronger growth ahead.
