Text only social network Boldomatic raises seed round of $700,000

boldomaticSwiss social sharing site Boldomatic has closed a $700,000 seed round from a number of European angels and investors.

The company, which pitches itself as a “content-creation platform and community… determined to conquer the world of words in social media” offers, as their own words may hint at, a social network that consists entirely of text based entries. The company says it wants to “make social sharing of thoughts as important as [the] social sharing of images.”

Boldomatic claims that with Facebook reducing the reach of text-based posts, it “fills a market need with its emphasis on the power of language, while addressing consumers’ desire to extend online experiences offline.”

Naturally in 2015 there’s a strong mobile focus, with apps available for both iOS and Android complimenting its browser version that allows writers to create text-only posts that are said to increase increase visibility on other social networks. Users can connect, interact, rate and categorize bold statements that are shared within the Boldomatic network, and unlike Facebook, Boldomatic users have the ability to remain anonymous should they choose to.

Boldomatic doesn’t do advertising, instead making revenue through an online shop that allows users to create and purchase physical products of their, or others “bold statements” on prints, apparel and accessories such as posters, canvases, t-shirts, coffee mugs, tote bags and pillows.

“Boldomatic is purely designed for people who want to stand out from the regular social media crowd and express themselves through text statements, without any visual clutter. It’s just bold text on a colored square – simple, yet timeless.” Co-Founder and CEO of Boldomatic Steffen Schietinger told SiliconANGLE via email. “The financial funding is a great vote of confidence in our vision, and allows us to build the tools to provide the best online and offline community for creative writers.”

It’s an interesting idea, and although the connotations of calling it that may immediately suggest negative connotations it’s meant literally. A text-only based social network naturally isn’t for everyone, but in a time where social media has become epically noisy, there’s something pure and appealing about going back to the core basics that made the internet what it is today, be it with a modern, social sharing twist.

Boldomatic said it would use the seed round to support its growth and expansion into the U.S. market as well as the development of the platform’s social commerce capabilities.
