WANDisco expands data replication across different Hadoop iterations | #BigDataSV

WANdisco, plc. has expanded the abilities of their NameNode product to enable clients to replicate data between different Hadoop iterations. “Customers want choice,” said Brett Rudenstein, Director of Project Management at WANdisco, and that demand has led the software provider to add further functionality, creating the Non-Stop NameNode.

For years, Rudenstein said, WANdisco has provided customers with the ability to “seamlessly replicate data across geographic distances.” The goal, he said, is to “keep data centers up and running” and to “maximize potential.” Part of achieving these goals is to offer “deeper integrators into Cloudera” while “offering [their] own UIs.” These developments enable customers to get both a global view of data centers and Hadoop that spans data centers.

In particular, Rudenstein called out that NameNode helps customers overcome what he considers to be their biggest struggle: consistency. “Our technology helps people have a strongly consistent metadata and data system,” one that is consistent “across any territory.” Clients can “get current results” no matter where they are.

Rudenstein illustrated his point by demoing the Non-Stop NameNode live on theCUBE at the BigDataSV conference. Through a Cloudera manager interface, Rudenstein demonstrated “what it means to be globally consistent, adding the same file to two nodes at the exact same time — one in West Virginia and one in Oregon.” “What it means,” he said, “is that as this runs, all of the name nodes will participate.” And once the job completes, Rudenstein explained, he was able to sort it, run MapReduce, and have “access to local blocks and global blocks” all at the same time.

The benefit, he said, “is consistency. Never will you have to spend days consistency checking.” And, “when it’s done,” customers will be able to “fully utilize cluster resources.” This is important, said Rudenstein, because “this is the only tech that allows you to fully realize all resources, to inject data in both locations.” With consistency and immediacy at their fingertips, he suggested, clients will see a great cost significance both in terms of time and finance.
