The new models, pricing strategy for IoT businesses

During a live interview on theCUBE at IBM InterConnect 2015, Stefan Ferber, vice president of Bosch Software Innovations, observed that the Internet of Things has its own business model catering to customers who build their own products. Bosch supports this model with an elastic subscription-based business that is able to grow with its customers’ needs.

My smart home shopping list as a first-time mom

First-time parents need all the help they can get and thanks to the Internet of Things, first-time parents get a reprieve.  It’s easy to get overwhelmed when taking care of a newborn, so for this first-time mom, there’s a handful of smart gadgets that look mighty appealing. Devices that monitor bottle feeding, bath temperature and weather-detecting strollers could help first-time parents stay on top of their child care efforts.

Cars talk to roads, kitchen pantries talk to you

Volvo Cars has teamed up with transportation and public roads administrations for a cloud-based system that will allow drivers to share information with other vehicles. Automobiles will be able to alert each other of road friction (ex. icy patches), all in an effort to eliminate or lessen the hazards associated with unsafe roads.

Also featured in this roundup is the cloud-connected smart jar Neo which keeps track of its own ingredients, recipes and nutritional value, and the KOTT-Smart shower display that helps homeowners save on water consumption.

Newest smart gadgets for healthy skin, feline fitness

Featured in this roundup are two devices to stimulate healthier skin. First is the OKU, a personal skin coach that analyzes what vitamins and exposure times the skin needs, and the UV-tracking Violet.

Also featured in this roundup is PetPace’s smart collar for cats. The device features the same technology used on the smart dog collar version to track temperature, pulse, respiration, activity, positions and calories.

The new Netvibes: CEO shares vision for controlling Internet of Things

Netvibes has recently reinvented itself to become the controller of the Internet of Things and its CEO Freddy Mini shared how the company evolved into such. To become an IoT controller, Mini stated that Netvibes needed to first listen to the data by bringing it all together from across the Internet. Once centralized, Netvibes users can act based on the data. The natural next step was to enable automated actions for a selection of web services, triggered by a user-generated, programmable Potions.

IBM, ARM announce IoT Starter Kit

IBM and ARM Holdings plc announced a partnership for an Internet of Things starter kit designed to help hardware developers more readily test their prototypes. Named the Mbed Device Platform, this IoT-friendly kit is designed to be set up and used in just five minutes after unboxing.

Flexible electronics make cities smarter

Thin Film Electronics ASA develops and manufactures printed electronics for use in all sorts of instances, all of which can help the IoT market gain momentum. A recent partnership with scotch maker Diageo, Thin Film has developed a printable sensor encoded with all sorts of useful tidbits, even letting you know if the bottle’s been previously open.

Also featured in this roundup is the curious case as to why Singapore does not use the term ‘smart city’, while model smart city Mannheim is building new infrastructure atop broadband power lines.

3D Robotics raises $50M to build better drones with mobile chips

3D Robotics Inc. has raised $50 million in a Series C round led by Qualcomm Ventures with the participation of Foundry Group, True Ventures, OATV, Mayfield, Shea Ventures and a number of unknown investors. This round of funding comes just weeks after the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) ratified its proposed regulations on drone use in the U.S.

New starter kits for IoT developers

Developers now have more tools to help them develop hardware and software for the Internet of Things, like the new Spark Electron. The compact development kit supports cellular-connected electronics projects and products, and comes with the Simblee chip to simplify app creation.
