Search solutions startup Swiftype raises $13 million Series B

swiftypeSearch solutions startup Swiftype Inc. has raised $13 million Series B in a round from New Enterprise Associates.

Based in San Francisco, Swiftype offers a hosted search solution that allows site owners to deliver customizable search for their website or mobile app with just a few lines of code.

The company claims to power search on over 100,000 websites and apps, and customers include Qualcomm and Dr. Pepper, through to tech firms and startups including Twitch and CloudFlare.

“Swiftype has come a long way since graduating from Y Combinator in March of 2012” Founder and CEO Matt Riley said in a statement. “…today we’re a team of over 25 incredibly talented individuals, and our business has grown similarly. Today we power billions of queries every month across hundreds of thousands of websites, mobile applications, and SaaS applications.”

As part of the deal, New Enterprise Associates Partner Chetan Puttagunta is joining the Swiftype board.

Swiftype is a smart startup and although it’s not a household name, nor may it ever become one, there’s a good chance that if you’re reading this post you’ve probably used their search tools on third party sites previously without even realizing it.

The natural comparison is to Google, at least in terms of Swiftype’s core business of providing search facilities to other sites, and while Google is the undisputed king of search, Swiftype offers are more customizable platform that can be molded to fit the specific needs of individual sites, vs Google’s one size fits all, at least in terms of Google’s Custome Search Engine.

Swiftype said it would use the new round to fuel their continued growth, including expanding their sales and marketing efforts.
