Smart home for Apple Watch: 3 apps ready at store launch

With a bevvy of mobile apps, the Apple Watch is set to replace many smartphone functions. That could be quite promising for smart home owners, as Apple Inc.’s iOS has proved central to remote-controlling and managing smart home functions so far.

During Apple’s Spring Forward event, the Cupertino tech giant revealed that the Apple Watch will be available for shipping and in select Apple Stores for purchase on April 24. Those who want to be the first to get it can pre-order the device on April 10.

The Apple Watch will be available in nine countries — Australia, Canada, China, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, United Kingdom and United States — starting at $349.

If you’re into home automation or gearing up your home with smart connected devices, Apple Watch may prove to be quite useful for you. It will be launching with smart home-ready apps aside from the other travel, fitness, productivity and social media apps.

3 home automation apps with Apple Watch

Alarm.com

Alarm.com, Inc. was one of the companies that demoed its Apple Watch app at the Spring Forward event. The demo showed how the Apple Watch can be used to open connected garage doors, locks, lights, video, thermostats, water shut-off and more. The Alarm.com for Apple Watch app will also notify the wearer via Actionable Notifications on your Apple Watch if any of the connected devices are left opened or turned on.

You can now close your garage door or door or turn off lights and switches using the Apple Watch and not waste time by going back to do those things.

Honeywell Lyric

Honeywell Lyric is Honeywell International, Inc.’s smart thermostat. With the Apple Watch, you can control your Honeywell Lyric without having to whip out your phone. You can set presets, such as “I’m Away” or “I’m Going to Sleep,” to make the smart thermostat more efficient with a single tap on the Apple Watch.

You also get a notification on your Apple Watch when you’re out of the house asking if you want to switch to “Out of Town” mode to save more energy, and it automatically adjusts to your preferred temperature when you get back.

Lutron Caséta Wireless

Lutron Electronics Co., Inc. has a line of smart switches and dimmers called the Caséta Wireless that allows you to control your lights, shades and temperature remotely using your iPhone or Apple Watch if you choose to purchase it.

Aside from controlling lights, it also notifies you when you accidentally leave the lights on when you step out of the house and allows you to turn them off remotely.
