What to expect from Xiaomi’s Mi5

Xiaomi, Inc., the world’s third largest phone manufacturer and currently the hottest tech startup in China, was awarded a Guinness World Record for selling 2.11 million smartphones in just 12 hours. This record was accomplished during the Mi Fan Festival 2015 wherein it sold 2.12 million phones and made $335 million in revenue. Aside from selling smartphones, Xiaomi also sold 38,000 televisions, 200,000 fitness bands and 247,000 power strips, generating an income of $31 million.

In February, Xiaomi entered U.S. soil when it opened its online retail store for those in the U.S. Unfortunately, only Xiaomi accessories are being sold for consumers in the U.S., not their affordable smartphones. And with Xiaomi’s flagship smartphone the Mi5’s imminent launch, you can’t help but wonder what people in the U.S. are missing out on.

The Xiaomi Mi5

Specifications

The Mi5 is said to feature a 5.5-inch IPS LCD with a resolution of 1440 x 2560 pixels and ~534 ppi pixel density. It has a Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 processor and Adreno 430 GPU. It will come in 16/32/64GB of storage, but cannot be expanded, and a 4GB RAM. For its camera, sources are divided on this one. Some claim that the Mi5 will sport a 16MP primary camera and an 8MP front-facing camera, but others claim that it will have an ISOCELL-powered 20.7MP camera, which is better at capturing images in the dark. It packs a 3200 mAh battery, which should last all day, so no more missing important messages or calls.

Special features

The Xiaomi Mi5 is said to have an IP67 rating, which means it is both dust-proof and water-resistant, so splashing water on it or bringing it poolside won’t ruin your device. There’s also a rumor going around that the Mi5 will come with an external phone cooler, which will allow users to continue using the device for gaming, consuming media or just chatting with friends without having to worry about their device heating up. The question now is, what will this external cooling device look like and will it really keep the Mi5 cool but not drain the battery?
