Rockstar has no problem with GTA V mods, denies banning players

Earlier this week, large numbers of Grand Theft Auto V players claimed that they had been banned from Grand Theft Auto Online for using single player mods in GTA V. Today, Rockstar Games finally addressed the issue, saying that no such bans had taken place, and the developer is has no problem with single player mods.

“We have always appreciated the creative efforts of the PC modding community and we still fondly remember the awesome zombie invasion mod and original GTA map mod for GTAIV PC among many other classics,” Rockstar said in a Q&A on its site. “To be clear, the modding policy in our license has not changed and is the same as for GTAIV.”

Some popular single player mods for GTA V range from better FOV options and Oculus Rift support to quirky weapons, such as Half-Life inspired gravity gun.

“Recent updates to GTAV PC had an unintended effect of making unplayable certain single player modifications,” Rockstar said. “This was not intentional, no one has been banned for using single player modifications, and you should not worry about being banned or being relegated to the cheater pool just for using single player PC mods.”

“Game mods are by definition unauthorized”

While single player mods are allowed, Rockstar is still firmly opposed to third-party mods in multiplayer games like GTA Online due to their potential for abuse.

“Our primary focus is on protecting GTA Online against modifications that could give players an unfair advantage, disrupt gameplay, or cause griefing,” Rockstar explained. “It also bears mentioning that because game mods are by definition unauthorized, they may be broken by technical updates, cause instability, or affect your game in other unforeseen ways.”

While addressing complaints about cheating, Rockstar added, “Unfortunately even a tiny minority of people cheating can have a negative impact on a larger population.”

“While it’s unrealistic to say we can solve the problem of cheating forever and for everyone, we believe we are making significant progress on this issue and we will continue to work aggressively to stop these griefers in their tracks as best we can.”
