IBM blends scale-out with enterprise grade in Power servers | #IBMEdge

Enterprise-class systems have comprised the heart of IBM’s Power Systems products for years.

“Clients depend on Power as their system of record,” said Steve Sibley, VP of IBM’s Power Enterprise Systems, while joining theCUBE during IBM Edge2015. “They count on it 24/7 to be up, running, managing their data and executing many of their transactions.”

Expanding the ecosystem

Lately, IBM has turned its attention to scale-out technology, with positive results. “Much of the scale-out growth has been driven from application development from the open source community,” said Sibley. “Our focus and drive into scale-out has been around openness, new apps and expanding the ecosystem.”

IBM’s recently announced Power E850 brings characteristics of both enterprise and scale-out technology. “The E850 brings many of our enterprise capabilities into that four-socket space, which has scale-out characteristics, as well,” he said.

A Cloud service delivery model built on IBM Power Systems provides efficiency and flexibility for multiple industries.

“We need to be able to address new markets immediately from an agility standpoint,” said Sibley. “People use the Cloud for the commodity and economic efficiency, but it’s more than that. It’s the ability to create new apps without having to spend months setting up your infrastructure. With the agility that we provide on our enterprise class systems, you can get that same capability.”

Look for more growth in IBM’s Power Systems and OpenPOWER ecosystem in the immediate future.
