Leaked iOS 9 feature points at Force Touch coming to iPhone 6s

Last month KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said that Apple’s next-generation iPhone will include Force Touch technology. Now a leak detailing some of the features in Apple’s upcoming iOS 9 release appears to confirm Kuo’s prediction.

iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus to feature Force Touch

Sources familiar with the development of the next iteration of Apple’s mobile operating system have told 9to5Mac that the company has designed iOS 9 to be Force Touch-ready. The iPhone maker is reportedly also working on enabling developer access to Force Touch functionality in order for its inclusion in third-party App Store apps.

For those unfamiliar with Force Touch, it was first introduced alongside the Apple Watch and has now also made it into the latest MacBooks. Force Touch distinguishes between a light and hard finger press and, depending on which it detects, triggers a contextual action.

With Force Touch supported in iOS 9, the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus will gain a number of new features similar to those found on Apple Watch and new MacBooks, including:

  • Dropping a new pin in the Maps app
  • Pressure-sensitive scrolling in media players
  • Adding new events to the Calendar
  • Touch to look up dictionary definitions from anywhere

As 9to5Mac notes, Force Touch support in iOS 9 is directly linked to the next iPhone and since that device is yet to be announced, it is unlikely that Apple will announce Force Touch support when they unveil iOS 9 at WWDC 2015 next month.

Apart from Force Touch for iOS 9, the sources also shared a few other new features and updates coming to iOS, including:

Updated keyboard for iOS 9

Apple is prototyping a keyboard for iOS 9 that is wider and boasts more editing controls in portrait mode compared to the current iOS 8 version. The QucikType keyboard is set to become more prominent across the OS and Apple is seemingly remedying the Shift Key issue in iOS 8, making it obvious if shift or caps lock is active.

Support for Apple Pay in Canada

Apple is updating Passbook in iOS 9 with support for Apple Pay to include the necessary support for Canadian financial institutions, making it likely that Canada will become the first country outside the U.S. to support Apple Pay.

iMessage tweaks

Among other updates, iMessage will be tweaked to include read receipts for group chats and read receipts on a contact-by-contact basis.

Other, smaller iOS 9 features will include additional data points for the Health app and possibly the demise of the Game Center app.
