Apple launches News for iOS 9, Flipboard-like reading app | #WWDC15

At its annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in San Francisco, Apple on Monday introduced a new Flipboard-like news reader app set to be released in iOS 9 this fall.

Apple’s new news reader app, called News, uses machine learning algorithms to learn your reading interests and suggest content it thinks you will find relevant.

News also sports a new digital publishing format, dubbed Apple News Format, that supports custom typography, image galleries, audio and video files, and interactive animations.

If privacy is your concern, Apple says you need not worry as your reading habits and data are not shared with third parties.

Publishers that have signed up to create content for News on iOS include Condé Nast, ESPN and the New York Times.

News will roll out in iOS 9 in September in the U.S., U.K. and Australia, with more countries to be added at a later stage.

News replaces Newsstand as Apple’s news and content aggregator on iOS.

The iOS 9 beta and SDK are available to iOS Developer Program members immediately, and a public beta program will kick off in July. iOS 9 will be available for iPhone 4s and later, iPod touch 5th generation, iPad 2 and later, iPad mini and later in September.

Other iOS 9 features introduced by Apple at WWDC include intelligent and proactive search and improved Siri features, as well public transit information for a host of cities worldwide.
