Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night becomes the most funded game ever on Kickstarter

Mixing a video game industry veteran with a spiritual successor to a beloved classic game seems to be the winning combination for Kickstarter, and the success of that formula has once again been demonstrated by Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night, a new game from former Castlevania producer Koji Igarashi. With less than a day remaining in its campaign, Bloodstained has broken the record of the most funded game ever with a current amount of over $4.7 million.

The game’s Kickstarter page describes it as “a gothic, exploration-focused action platformer, designed by one of the godfathers of the genre.”

Igarashi, also known to fans by his nickname “IGA,” had been involved in the Castlevania series since 1997, when he was an assistant director on the critically acclaimed PlayStation game Castlevania: Symphony of the Night. Igarashi left Konami in early 2014 (before it was cool) and set out to form his own studio.

Igarashi said that Bloodstained is meant to be “a new game built on some of the classic gaming principles my works are known for.” The game’s Kickstarter campaign has met every stretch goal except the final $5 million milestone, which would enable the development of a Roguelike dungeon mode.

“When we launched the Kickstarter not only did we prove the market for a game like this, we became the Number 1 video game Kickstarter of all time,” Igarashi wrote in an update on the campaign page. “I wish I could rewind the clock to the beginning of the campaign and kick myself for thinking we would probably only raise 800,000 if we got lucky. None of this would have been possible without the incredible support from an incredible community. So with that, Army of the Night, I will turn myself to the task of making a game truly worthy of all your kindness. I will not let you down.”

Bloodstained will be a cross-platform title available on PC/Mac/Linux, Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Wii U, and PS Vita. The PC version will be available DRM-free through GOG.com, a decision that was recently mirrored by Banjo-Kazooie successor Yooka Laylee. Kickstarter backers will also have the option to receive a retail version of the game.
