An oven that sees, thinks and teaches you to cook

This week’s Smart Living roundup features a smart oven that thinks like a chef, an Oreo cookie-sized security system and a device that monitors your propane tank.

June Intelligent Oven

The June Intelligent Oven is a countertop appliance that deals with all your baking, roasting, broiling, toasting and slow cooking needs … but with a twist.

It has a camera that is able to analyze what you’ve put inside, allowing it to determine the proper cooking time; the feet of the oven doubles as a scale, which allows you to know how much what you are cooking weighs; it has a touchscreen panel that allows you to see cooking instructions; and it features a single all-purpose knob for controlling the oven.

It also features an advanced carbon fiber heating element that allows the oven to reach maximum power in just five minutes, so no more waiting 15 minutes or more to pre-heat the oven. Though the oven can get hot inside, the outside remains cool so you don’t need to worry about getting accidentally burned when you brush up against it. You can use your smartphone to check on what you’re cooking using the live video feed, get alerts for when it’s done cooking, access recipes and even help you plan meals for a party.

You can reserve your own June Intelligent Oven for $95.

Loop Labs, Inc. is making home monitoring and security as easy as placing an Oreo-sized device on things in your home that you want to monitor. Called Notion, the system uses a sensor that can monitor for water leaks, sound, proximity, temperature, how long a light bulb was left on and how much propane is left on your tank for the grill. It can also monitor if windows, cabinets, a safe, a refrigerator or doors are opened. And a bridge that connects to your home Wi-Fi allows you to view sensor activities with a smartphone.

Installing a sensor is as easy as plugging in the bridge, peeling off the sticker on the back of the sensor, sticking it to things you want to monitor and connecting it to your home Wi-Fi.

Price starts at $129 for one bridge and one sensor.

GasWatch

Using a propane tank can be tricky. Since the tank is solid metal, you can’t really tell when you’re running low on gas and you have probably experienced running out of gas in the middle of a barbeque. Buzz kill.

GasWatch may just be the technology to help you deal with your propane tank woes. GasWatch is a propane tank scale with a gas level indicator that connects to your phone via Bluetooth. The scale is able to accurately measure how much propane is left in the tank and sends an alert to your smartphone when it’s running low.

The accompanying app also serves as a reminder tool so you never forget to turn off your propane tank after you’re done cooking.

GasWatch has been successfully funded on Indiegogo, Inc. and is expected to start shipping by September 2015.
