iPhone 6s Plus vs. Galaxy Note 5: Rumored specs, release date, more

On Friday, The Wall Street Journal reported that Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. will move up the launch of its Galaxy Note 5 to mid-August in an effort to beat rival Apple to market.

Apple is slated to introduce two new iPhones, the iPhone 6s and the iPhone 6s Plus sometime in September. Apple’s phablet-sized iPhone 6s Plus will compete directly with Samsung’s latest phablet.

That means come September, there will be two new phablets on the market to choose from.

We know very few hard facts about either of these devices, but multiple rumors and leaks in recent months give us a look at what we may expect.

Based on these rumors, below we compare the iPhone 6s Plus and the Galaxy Note 5:

iPhone 6s Plus vs. Galaxy Note 5: Display

For the iPhone 6s Plus, Apple is expected to stick to the same 5.5-inch, 1920×1080, Retina HD display as found on the current iPhone 6 Plus, with one addition: Force Touch. First seen on the Apple Watch, rumors suggest Apple has already started production of its “S” iPhone models that include Force Touch.

The Galaxy Note 5 may have a slightly larger screen, measuring in at 5.7 inches, and could feature a 2K or 4K AMOLED display with QHD resolution.

iPhone 6s Plus vs. Galaxy Note 5: Processor

The iPhone 6s Plus is expected to come equipped with Apple’s new A9 chip and have 2 GB of RAM, up from Apple’s standard 1 GB of RAM used in iPhones to date.

By comparison, the Galaxy Note 5 may come equipped with an Exynos 7422 chip, combining a 64-bit octa-core processor, GPU, storage, 3 GB of RAM and an LTE modem in one.

iPhone 6s Plus vs. Galaxy Note 5: Storage

Some rumors suggest Apple may do away with its 16 GB entry-level iPhone and instead offer a 32 GB base model; however, a recently leaked image of the iPhone 6s’ internal components showed only 16 GB of flash storage. Apple does not fit its phones with microSD card readers for additional storage.

The Note 5 will come in a 32 GB entry-level model, but rumors have suggested that Samsung may not include a microSD card reader on the Galaxy Note 5.

iPhone 6s Plus vs. Galaxy Note 5: Camera

Apple’s next iPhone is expected to boast a significant bump up in camera technology and may feature a 12-megapixel rear camera with optical image stabilization.

The Galaxy Note 5, in comparison, may have a 16-megapixel rear camera, also with optical image stabilization.

iPhone 6s Plus vs. Galaxy Note 5: Design

Leaked images and rumors have indicated that the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus will retain identical exterior designs to the current iPhone models.

Leaked renderings have shown the Galaxy Note 5 with design elements from the Galaxy S6, including a glass back and metal edges.

iPhone 6s Plus vs. Galaxy Note 5: Operating system

The iPhone 6s Plus will likely ship with Apple’s newly announced iOS 9 operating system, due for general release this fall.

The Galaxy Note 5 will ship with Android 5.1.1 Lollipop with a likely upgrade to “Android M” – Google’s latest version of its Android operating system currently available as a developer preview – to follow.

iPhone 6s Plus vs. Galaxy Note 5: Release date

No firm date has been set for the release of Apple’s next iPhones, but if the company follows its traditional launch schedule, the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus will arrive sometime during September.

Originally expected to unveil the Galaxy Note 5 at IFA in early September, rumors suggest Samsung may unveil its new phablet as early as mid-August to avoid it being overshadowed by the new iPhone 6s Plus.
