Leaked Galaxy S6 edge+ images: 5.7” dual-curved screen, no design surprises

Last week we learned that Samsung Electronics Co Ltd. intends to unveil two new phablet-sized Galaxy smartphones, the Galaxy Note 5 and Galaxy S6 edge+, in August.

We now have an early glimpse of what at least one of Samsung’s new phablets may look like. Over the weekend leaked images appeared online of what is said to be a store dummy unit of the Galaxy S6 edge+, a larger-screen version of Samsung’s flagship dual-curved screen Galaxy S6 edge. The images, published by German site All About Samsung, show what is said to be a dummy Galaxy S6 edge+ next to a Galaxy Note 4.

While the images do not reveal much, it is apparent that the Galaxy S6 edge+ has a similar screen size to the Galaxy Note 4 it is shown next to – around 5.7-inches. This is in line with rumored details about the device that are doing the rounds.

The images appear to confirm what we know so far about the exterior design of the Galaxy S6 edge+: it will merely be a larger-screen version of the 5.1-inch Galaxy S6 edge it is based on.

As for what is under the hood and other technical specs, rumors suggest the Galaxy S6 edge+ will have a 5.7-inch 2K or 4K AMOLED display with QHD resolution and dual-curved edges, Samsung’s own Exynos 7420 chip combining a 64-bit octa-core processor, GPU, 32GB of storage, 3GB of RAM and LTE modem in one chip. Like the Galaxy S6 edge, it will not have a microSD card reader or removable battery.

The Galaxy S6 edge+ will most likely have the same camera specs as the standard device: a 5MP front-facing camera and a 16MP rear-facing camera with f/1.9 apertures and optical image stabilization.

The Galaxy S6 edge+ will compete with Apple’s 5.5-inch iPhone 6 Plus and the rumored iPhone 6s Plus due for release sometime in September.

Originally slated to be announced at IFA taking place in Berlin at the beginning of September, Samsung seemingly moved the launch forward in an attempt to give its new phablets a better chance of competing with Apple’s new iPhones.

Samsung is expected to announce the Galaxy S6 edge+ on August 12, and sales should kick off August 21.

Recent FCC filings suggest that Samsung’s Galaxy Note 5 and Galaxy S6 edge+ will be available through major U.S. carriers, including T-Mobile, AT&T, Verizon, and U.S. Cellular.
