Microsoft’s Advanced Threat Analytics to be made generally available in August

Microsoft Corp.’s cybersecurity solution Advanced Threat Analytics (ATA) will be made generally available in August 2015, the company announced Wednesday.

Based on the on-premises cybersecurity software Microsoft acquired through its acquisition of Aorato, Inc. 2014, ATA, as its name suggests, offers threat analytics for on-premises data centers that helps companies identify advanced persistent threats before they can cause damage.

The software offers its service via a variety of features, including the use of be behavioral analytics that leverage machine learning to detect advanced security threats, through a process of continuous learning that adapts to the ongoing, changing nature of cybersecurity threats.

ATA delivers the ability to narrow down important security factors using an easy to use, simplified attack timeline, along with what the company describes as “innovative technology” that reduces “false positive fatigue” (the process where items are flagged where they shouldn’t be) and instead raises alerts only when needed.

The software is also said to help identify known malicious attacks, security issues and risks, and presents all of this information in an easy-to-consume, and simple-to-drill-down, social media-like feed.

“After investigating a lot of cyber-security incidents in my previous jobs, I realized that network logs are not sufficient for detecting advanced attacks because finding attackers through log analysis is like searching for a needle in the haystack,” former Aorato Chief Executive Officer and now head of the ATA team Idan Plotnik said in a blog post.

“We’ve taken a different approach with Microsoft ATA. Our secret sauce is our combination of network Deep Packet Inspection (DPI), information about the entities from Active Directory, and analysis of specific events. With this unique approach, we give you the ability to detect advanced attacks and stolen credentials and view all suspicious activities on an easy to consume, simple to explore, social media feed like attack timeline.”

ATA will be available for purchase standalone, as well as part of Microsoft’s Enterprise Mobility Suite (EMS) and the Enterprise Client Access License (ECAL.)

The software will be available for download August 1st, but pricing is a mystery as Microsoft has not officially released how much they want for it.
