Systems of Intelligence: What impact will they have? | #BigData on Crowdchat

Wikibon analyst George Gilbert recently penned a groundbreaking piece of research entitled “Systems of Intelligence”, (Part 1 and Part 2) which looks out how the next generation of apps built on intelligent and predictive platforms will revolutionize the ways in which enterprises do business.

On Tuesday, Gilbert, along with fellow Wikibon analysts Dave Vellante, Stu Miniman, David Floyer and SiliconANGLE founder John Furrier, hosted an interactive, Q&A style, #BigData CrowdChat centered on Gilbert’s latest research. There, they discussed methods in which enterprises can build on existing Systems of Record; how to choose the most appropriate technology platforms to do so; and which vendors are currently in the best position to help customers on this journey.

Systems of Record (SoR). What are they?

SiliconANGLE‘s John Furrier kicked off the discussion by asking the Wikibon team to define exactly what “Systems of Record” are, as opposed to Systems of Intelligence (SoI). B2B Technology Marketer Jen(Cohen)Cheplick hit the nail on the head by specifying ERPs, CRMs and databases – systems which are “pretty basic” for anyone looking to perform any meaningful analytics, Gilbert added.

“It’s just about historical performance reporting – equivalent to steering a ship by looking backwards at its wake,” was how Gilbert summed them up.

The discussion quickly turned to the kinds of capabilities that modern enterprises now see as must-have features – capabilities that traditional systems of record simply don’t possess. Kevin Petrie, a Technology Evangelist with Attunity, noted that features like recommendations, NLP and other machine learning apps are becoming essential to many enterprise offerings.

“We expect Amazon to make recommendations, customer service to email an auto-response, Facebook to tag our images,” he said. His comments prompted Gilbert to remind us that Big Data will be at the heart of all these developments to ensure greatest accuracy and fast/streaming data for currency.

Where are we on the customer journey to Systems of Intelligence?

Gilbert fielded this question by first offering up another couple of definitions so as to keep everyone on the same page. According to him, Systems of Engagement modern mobile UI with cloud delivery, while Systems of Intelligence are characterized by predictive analytics that can anticipate and influence consumer interactions for better outcomes on both sides.

EMC’s Executive Briefing Sr Manager for Rio de Janeiro, Rodrigo Gazzaneo, posited an interesting question when he asked whether or not Internet of Things (IoT) platforms could also be considered SoI. Gilbert said that in his opinion, IoT platforms were “future versions” of SoI that will automatically respond to machine data instead of anticipating human interaction.

“For example – a smart grid system might auto tune energy consumption of appliances in an individual home,” Gilbert said by way of explanation.

What can Systems of Intelligence apps do at their best or most desired outcomes?

When it comes to the benefits of SoI applications to the enterprise, Gilbert said the biggest advantage is they’re able to live up to their name and act intelligently, “without recommending user action”, for example in systems management, smart grids, ad exchanges and so on.

Jen(Cohen)Cheplick chipped in to say the most important benefit of SoI apps is their ability to make life easier for the average business user. SoI apps enable users to “make better decisions with more complete and timely data – as well as recommendations about what those decisions should be”, she said. Cheplick was also quick to agree with Wikibon CTO David Floyer’s assertion that the best ROI of SoI apps will come from their “deployment in automating business processes; system to system, not system to people”.
