Disney’s ‘Big Hero 6’ is coming to Kingdom Hearts III

It is starting to look like there may be the slimmest chance that Kingdom Hearts III might finally release sometime within our lifetime, as Square Enix Holdings Ltd. and The Walt Disney Company continue releasing actual, totally not made-up details about the upcoming game that has supposedly been in development for nearly a decade.

The latest news to come out of the JRPG/Disney mash-up is the addition of the setting and characters from Big Hero 6, Disney Animation’s anime-inspired 2014 film that won the Academy Award for Best Animated Picture earlier this year.

“It feels like just yesterday that we let the cat out of the bag and announced that Tangled would be featured in Kingdom Hearts III,” Roy Conli, a producer at Walt Disney Animation Studios, said in a video announcement. “It is an honor for me today to announce to the world that now Big Hero 6 will also be featured in Kingdom Hearts III.”

He added, “As you know, San Fransokyo is a great representation of two amazing cities – Tokyo and San Francisco – and now we have teams both in Japan and the United States working on another love letter to those two great cities.”

The story of Big Hero 6 shares a few similarities with the Kingdom Hearts series, both of which focus on a young boy teaming up with an eclectic bunch of weirdos to take on some evil something-or-other. Conli also points to the story of Kingdom Hearts as a perfect fit for the themes and characters of Big Hero 6.

“The themes in Kingdom Hearts and Big Hero 6 match very well,” said Conli. “For instance, there’s friendship — really important to both stories — and then of course light over darkness.”

According to Conli, the Kingdom Hearts III storyline will take place after the events of the Big Hero 6 film, with the heroic team already formed.

This is a slight departure from many of the levels in the earlier Kingdom hearts games, which often took place early in events of their respective films. This was likely done to include iconic villains like Maleficent, Jafar, and Ursula before their inevitable demises, but since Big Hero 6 didn’t exactly have a memorable villain, it makes sense to skip forward in the story.

“Not only will this allow us to explore all new adventures focused on great action,” Conli explained, “but we’ll also get to see Baymax again.”
