Battle of the round-faced smartwatches: Moto 360 2 vs. Samsung Gear S2

Marketing strategy or an honest-to-goodness accidental announcement? That’s the question for those who saw the infamous tweet from Motorola Mobility Holdings, Inc. regarding the new version of its Moto 360 smartwatch. At present, the tweet has been removed, but not before it was seen and talked about by techies the world over.

Though it was previously thought that the smartwatch seen in the tweet may have just been Photoshopped, there’s proof that it may actually be the next Motorola smartwatch. Lenovo Group, Ltd. CEO Yang Yuanqing posted a photo on Chinese microblogging site Weibo a few months back that showed the same watch featured in the tweet. Lenovo completed its acquisition of Motorola in October of last year, in case you were wondering why Lenovo’s CEO is posting images of a Motorola smartwatch.

While rumors of a new Motorola smartwatch have been floating around for months, it was only recently that rival gadget maker Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. gave us a sneak peek of its first-round smartwatch, the Gear S2. Not much is known about the specification and features of either of these devices, but it’s fun to compare these pending wearables even before they hit store shelves.

Moto 360 2 vs. Gear S2

Design

Moto 360 2Both smartwatches have a round face reminiscent of analog watches, but the Moto 360 2 features lugs, the protrusion where the watch band is connected, that make it appear even more like an analog watch.

The lugs might mean that users could use regular watch bands with the Moto 360 or just make it easier to replace the band. Based on leaked images, the Moto 360 2 will come in two sizes. Finally, the Gear S2 looks more sporty compared to the Moto 360 2.

Display

The Samsung Gear S2 is said to feature a 360 x 360 Super AMOLED display with 305ppi. It doesn’t have a black crescent at the bottom of the screen like the Moto 360 2 does. As for the second version of Moto 360, it is said to also feature a 360 x 360 display.

Processor, storage and battery

As for the Moto 360 2, the device is said to come with a 1.2GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 processor, 512 RAM, 400mAh battery, Bluetooth 4.0, Wi-Fi, accelerometer, gyroscope, baromoter and heart rate sensor.
