Report: new iPhone 6s to get long overdue camera upgrade to 12MP, animated wallpaper

Apple, Inc.’s forthcoming new iPhone may finally up the megapixels with a new camera, according to a report Thursday.

According to 9to5Mac “sources” the new iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus will come with a 12 megapixel camera, the first increase in an iPhone camera since the range moved to 8 megapixels with the iPhone 4s launched way back in 2011.

Along with the long overdue increase in megapixels, the new cameras are said to provide support for 4K video recording, allowing users to record video that works on the latest ultra high definition televisions, delivering improved stability and clarity; The report notes that Apple is likely to highlight 4K as one of the new iPhone’s premier additions for marketing purposes, despite the fact 4K video recording has been available on a number of Android phones going back several years.

The selfie, or as Apple calls it the Facetime front facing camera isn’t being ignored either and is said to be receiving an upgraded sensor for higher quality video calls and selfies, along with the addition of front flash support.

A megapixel count from the front facing camera wasn’t given but is noted to be able to record in 720p along with the ability to do panorama and slow motion shots; previous reports have indicated that the front facing camera will come in at 5 megapixels and given the delivery of 720p video this would probably be about right.

Animated wallpapers

Along with the camera upgrades, a separate report states that Apple will be taking a leaf from the Android playbook and offering animated wallpapers for the first time.

Like Force Touch, the feature comes across from the Apple Watch, in particular, a set of the animated wallpapers/ watch faces that dominate the main screen of the Apple Watch.

Unlike the more open Android operating system where third parties can design animations and make them available to users, the similar feature in the new iPhone’s will be limited to a small number of options provided by Apple, including jellyfish, multicolored butterflies, or brightly colored flowers.

A “leak” of an alleged iPhone 6s box doing the rounds includes a picture of a koi fish on the box, confirming that the feature may be forthcoming, however the report notes that “the animation features in testing could have ultimately been dropped from the final iPhone 6S launch.”

Also confirmed Thursday was the news we all expected: the new iPhone event is being held September 9.
