A 10-year journey into public Cloud | #VMWorld 2015

VMware, Inc. showed the more than 23,000 VMworld attendees how it plans to dominate the Cloud infrastructure market and embrace new technologies. Of the latest buzzwords, such as hyper-converged and containers, VMware President and COO Carl Eschenbach said, “We don’t look at them as competitive threats. We look at them as marketing extension opportunities. They all run on the same platform that we brought to market for the past several years.”

Eschenbach spoke to John Furrier and Dave Vellante of theCUBE, from the SilconANGLE Media team, during VMworld 2015 in San Francisco. According to Eschenbach, part of VMware’s vision for the next year includes expanding its network. “We’re talking to multiple audiences, whereas five years ago we may have talked to a single audience,” he said. “We make sure the core IT is relevant to these next generation of users that want to leverage their infrastructure. That’s really playing out in the show this year.”

Virtualization to the Cloud to security

VMware NSX virtualized network platform is getting a lot of talk at VMworld. “Customer engagements have expanded from virtualization to the Cloud to security, and a lot of that is around NSX,” Eschenbach said.

Enhancements to VMware’s vCloud Air public Cloud, announced at VMWorld, also have customers’ attention. “We know that customers want to leverage many Clouds. It’s not just infrastructure as a service Clouds, it’s platform as a service and sales as a service,” Eschenbach said. “The engineering of what we’re doing is deeply integrated into our solutions, but it doesn’t prevent our customers from using other Clouds.”

The virtualization industry’s biggest event shows that VMware is moving ahead in many ways. “Our strategy is coming together, and our customer is seeing it in real time at this show,” Eschenbach said.
