Gelsinger on the Magic of the Cloud | #VMworld

theCUBE alum Pat Gelsinger, CEO of VMware, Inc., sat down with Dave Vellante and John Furrier of theCUBE, from the SiliconANGLE Media team, at VMworld 2015 to discuss the topics in his visionary and futuristic keynote speech from Day 2 at WMworld, as well as to lay out VMware’s position in the industry.

Looking toward the future, Furrier asked Gelsinger, “What is hybrid Cloud?” Gelsinger considers hybrid Cloud as the culmination of bringing together SaaS capabilities to the enterprise level in a homogenous way, offering scalable workloads and an environment in which to run them.

Moore’s Law for the Ccloud

Applying Moore’s Law to the Cloud today, Gelsinger’s observation was that in this analogy the Cloud brings benefits in both performance and economics in what he calls the magic of the Cloud. He also regards it as an engine of innovation that has not stopped.

Game changers

One of the issues Gelsinger pointed to was that in order to service the enterprise, companies need to develop heterogeneous strategies. “Today’s customer wants to know the proof point and the promise of where to go fundamentally during a transformative phase,” he said.

He also is excited about VMware’s role in powering the Internet of Things (IoT). He pointed to examples in the medical field where managing and accessing information via cell phone will be necessary in the future.

DevOps vs. IT

The ecosystem that is bringing DevOps and IT together is also a promising development. His view on this debate is that the top developers do not want to worry about infrastructure, but they also do not want the hassle it brings. Therefore, development of agile and lightweight infrastructure is necessary.

Immigration and education

Gelsinger embraced the fact that the world wants to export top talent to the U.S. He views closing our doors to the most talented people is a stupid policy. When looking at the trend of reduced incomes for Americans due to technology, he said, “Reverse the trend. At the heart of the problem is education.” He pointed out that there is a need to improve the American secondary education system to provide the skills that are necessary to attract more people to computer science.
