This week’s Smart World Series features new smart devices that launched at IFA 2015, new Internet of Things (IoT) development platforms, connected devices to help us monitor our health and more.
For those who missed last week’s Smart World Series, here’s a chance to catch up on the exciting developments in the connected world. Each week, SiliconANGLE rounds up the top news trends regarding smart homes and cars, smart data centers and IT, smart infrastructure and all things related to IoT.
At the IFA 2015, LG Electronics, Inc. unveiled the smartThinQ, a sensor that turns dumb appliances smart. It also works with new smart appliances, such as the Smart Lightwave Oven and the Smart Air Conditioner, which are both compatible with open-source IoT platform AllJoyn.
Also featured in this roundup is Amazon’s alleged plan of creating a computer dedicated to the kitchen and the Maille Discover Spoon, which remembers your favorite mustard flavor.

Ahead of IFA 2015, one of the biggest technology trade shows of the year, manufacturers revealed what they would be showcasing at the event. Some of the devices revealed include Samsung’s new Gear S2 smartwatches, LG’s Styler smart steamer, Acer’s Liquid Z630 and Liquid Z530, and Asus’ ZenFone Zoom.

Royal Philips introduced a new product called the Philips Hue Lightstrip Plus. This new light offering is just a smart as the other connected lights offered by Philips, but what makes it different is that it is flexible and can be expanded to up to 10 meters, allowing you to put lights pretty much wherever you please.

Engineers at the University of California, San Diego are working on a smart mouth guard that is embedded with sensors that can monitor health markers, such as lactate, cortisol and uric acid, which can be used to determine if the person has gout, diabetes or is under a lot of stress.
Also featured in this roundup is a new smart ear thermometer that has been successfully funded in just a day; Qualcomm Life, Inc.’s new partnership for continuous care; a new security system is being deployed to safeguard connected medical devices; and a hand-held device that can detect your health status.

IBM has teamed up with chipmaker ARM Holdings, plc to integrate its IoT technology with ARM’s chips, which will also allow ARM Mbed chips to directly connect to the IBM IoT foundation analytics platform. Data from these Mbed chips will be delivered to the cloud for analysis and manufacturers can deliver events directly to users.

New platforms for IoT were launched last week to help developers get their products to market much faster. Some of the recent IoT platforms that launched include the WiSe Connect Platform from WiSilica; the hardware development platform called TESPA, which launched on Kickstarter; Webroot’s IoT toolkit; FocusMotion’s wearable SDK; and Sierra Wireless’ IoT acceleration program.
