Blizzard unveils launch date and intro cinematic for ‘StarCraft II: Legacy of the Void’

Blizzard Entertainment’s StarCraft franchise could be considered one of the founding fathers of eSports, and while it may not be the first game to be played professionally, it is certainly one of the biggest. Now, Blizzard has finally revealed more details about that highly anticipated final expansion to StarCraft II, Legacy of the Void, including both an official release date and the intro cinematic trailer.

“You are Hierarch Artanis, leader of the mighty protoss race,” Blizzard’s description of the expansion says. “Years ago, your homeworld of Aiur fell to the merciless zerg Swarm. Now, at long last, you have raised a powerful fleet of warships known as the Golden Armada, and are poised to reclaim your world. But an ancient evil—Amon—threatens this destiny and the fate of the entire galaxy. Only you can reunite the protoss factions and defeat the coming darkness before it consumes all life in the sector.”

Blizzard has officially revealed that the expansion will be release on November 10, just in time to break the bank with gamers who also happen to want Fallout 4, Star Wars: Battlefront, and Rise of the Tomb Raider, among others.

The new expansion will add several new units to the game, which will more than likely shake up the somewhat stagnant StarCraft II metagame, which has been relatively unchanged since the 2013 expansion, Heart of the Swarm.

The expansion will also add a few new play modes, including daily “Automated Tournaments,” a two-player co-op mode called “Archon Mode,” and an objective-based co-op mode called “Allied Commanders.” Co-op seems to be an interesting direction for Blizzard to take, considering the game’s ultra-competitive roots, but with team-based games like Dota 2 and League of Legends currently leading the eSports industry, maybe getting players to work together might not be such a bad idea.

The new cinematic is as awesome as you would expect from Blizzard, who has a long history of epic game videos going back to some of the studio’s earliest games.
