LG Nexus 5X vs. Huawei Nexus 6P: Rumored specs, features, more

Google is expected to unveil two new Nexus devices at its event tomorrow: the LG Nexus 5X and Huawei Nexus 6P.

If you’ve been looking forward to 2015’s Nexus devices, you won’t be disappointed. Each of these devices caters to a specific set of smartphone buyers, and below we’ve pitted them against one another to help you make your decision.

Which Nexus is right for you? LG Nexus 5X vs. Huawei Nexus 6P

Design and dimensions

LG Nexus 5X: We do not have specific weight and dimensions for this year’s Nexus 5 but, with a slightly larger screen than its predecessor, it should also measure in a little bigger. Still, it is the smaller of the two 2105 Nexus phones.

There’s not much to get excited about when it comes to design, and the jury is still out on whether the Nexus 5X will come in a plastic or all-metal finish. The design includes front facing speakers and a fingerprint sensor on the back. Color options will include black, white and blue.

Huawei Nexus 6P: We know a bit more about the larger-screen Nexus 6P, which is set to weigh in at 178 grams and measure 159.4 x 77.8 x 7.3 millimeters. Like the Nexus 5X, the Nexus 6P also features front-ported speakers and a round fingerprint sensor on the back.

The all-metal design will be available in a choice of aluminum, graphite, frost, and gold.

Display

LG Nexus 5X: The Nexus 5X is a sub-flagship smartphone and the 5.2-inch full-HD (1080 x 1920 pixels) with 423 pixels per inch display reflects that status.

Huawei Nexus 6P: The flagship, phablet-sized, Nexus 6P boasts a 5.7-inch WQHD (or Quad HD) (1440 x 2560 pixels) with 518 pixels per inch AMOLED display covered in Gorilla Glass 4.

Internal components

LG Nexus 5X: Sticking with the sub-flagship status, the Nexus 5X is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 808 chipset made up of a dual-core ARM Cortex A57 at up to 2 GHz and quad-core A53 with 64-bit support, LTE modem, and graphics are powered by an Adreno 418 GPU.

As for memory and storage, the Nexus 5X will likely have 3GB of RAM and models will include a 16GB and 32GB option. It’s unclear is support for a microSD card is included, but the microUSB port if replaced by a USB Type-C port for faster charging and data transfer. The battery is a 2,700 mAh unit.

Huawei Nexus 6P: A flagship device needs a flagship power plant and the Nexus 6P gets that from the Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 chipset made up of a quad-core ARM Cortex A57 at up to 2 GHz and a quad-core A53 CPU with 64-bit support, LTE modem, and graphics powered by an Adreno 430 GPU.

The Nexus 6P sports 3GB of RAM with options for 32GB, 64GB, and 128GB onboard storage and a large 3,450 mAh battery. It also has a USB Type-C port in place of a microUSB port for faster charging and data transfer. Thanks to the Snapdragon 810 chip, the Nexus 6P may also come with Qualcomm’s Quick Charge technology.

Camera

LG Nexus 5X: Early rumors have pointed at a 12.3-megapixel rear camera and a 5-megapixel front camera. The Nexus 5X may get Sony’s IMX278 sensor P8, like the Nexus 5 used.

Huawei Nexus 6P: The Nexus 6P is getting a 12.3-megapixel rear-facing camera with a f/2.0 lens. The front-facing camera will likely be an 8-megapixel unit with 1.4 μM pixels.

Operating system

There’s no difference between these devices when it comes to software. Both will run pure-Android 6.0 Marshmallow and they’ll likely be the first smartphones to ship with Google’s latest mobile operating system. Both the Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P will benefit from a range of new Android features, including Doze to extend battery life by putting the device to sleep when it is idle, granular app permissions, native fingerprint scanner support, and more.

Pricing and availability

LG Nexus 5X: We don’t really know what price point the Nexus 5X will be launched at but, given its sub-flagship status, it will likely be in the $350 to $400 range. The device could go on sale as early as this week.

Huawei Nexus 6P: We also don’t have any pricing info for the Nexus 6P but as it is billed as a flagship device and has the specs and hardware to back it up, we are speculating that it could come in around the $700 mark. The gold color option will initially on only be available in Japan.

The verdict

If you’re after a pure-Android experience, either of these devices should do nicely. The biggest consideration would be price and screen size – in that order. As a budget smartphone, the Nexus 5X will likely be good value for money, while the Nexus 6P will deliver the goods at the higher end of the market. The camera in the Nexus 6P may also be enough of a differentiator for some.
