Hortonworks pushes analytics to the edge with DataFlow | #BigDataNYC

Open Enterprise Hadoop leader Hortonworks, Inc. announced at BigDataNYC 2015 and Strata + Hadoop World that its DataFlow support subscription is now available. Hortonworks DataFlow is powered by Apache nifi, an open-source project, and addresses opportunities presented by the Internet of Anything.

“DataFlow came out of the Onyara acquisition,” said Wei Wang, senior director of global product marketing for Hortonworks. “The use cases fall outside the data center: autos, cars, trains that have telematics.” Wang, as well as Matthew Morgan, VP of product & alliance marketing for Hortonworks, joined George Gilbert and John Furrier, cohosts of theCUBE, from the SiliconANGLE Media team, during BigDataNYC 2015.

Maximizing the value of Big Data

Morgan told Gilbert and Furrier that customers understand what Big Data means; now, they want to maximize the value of that data.

“We asked our customers about specific use cases and found some incredible corelations,” Morgan said. “There are two schools of thought on value: One is about cost savings. For CEOs, this relates to active archive; ETL offload, which allows you to add Hadoop to enterprise data warehouses.” The other school of thought is the enterprise data warehouse.

Although many customers prioritize cost savings, Morgan said that more than half of Hortonworks’s conversations revolve around business transformation. He showed Gilbert a graphic that he calls the “use case placemat,” which chronicles a customer journey. “Use cases comprise data discovery, single view and predictive analytics,” Morgan said. “With these Big Data applications, business leaders are transforming their companies.”
