Industry is bullish about ability to achieve value from Hadoop, says survey | #BigDataNYC

AtScale, Inc. recently revealed the results of it Maturity Survey about the state of Hadoop. There were over 2,200 participants from across the globe and across industries that provided feedback about their engagement with the data platform.

Bruno Aziza, chief marketing officer for AtScale, stopped by theCUBE, from the SiliconANGLE Media team, to speak with hosts Dave Vellante and George Gilbert about the survey’s discoveries.

The startup

AtScale, founded by CEO Dave Mariani (founder of MineShare, Inc.) three years ago, began to assemble sales and marketing and Big Data teams this past April to connect enterprise users to Hadoop.

AtScale partnered with Cloudera, Hortonworks, MapR Technologies, Inc. and Tableau to release the world’s largest and industry’s first worldwide Hadoop Maturity Survey. According to Aziza, “The data from this survey is telling us something different from other surveys.”

The numbers

Aziza pointed out the recent surveys conducted by Barclays and Gartner, Inc. had a smaller number of participants compared to AtScale’s numbers. Out of the 2,200 participants, 77 percent of companies have been using Hadoop.

Aziza said, “Companies using Hadoop to drive revenues are more likely to get more value than those using Hadoop to cut costs.”

Other interesting trends Aziza noted: “Hadoop is not replacing the data warehouse … and there is a need for agility with the data.”

The importance of BI

However, the real story is that business intelligence is becoming an important part of the equation for the enterprise. Aziza said, “There is a change in the way people are leveraging data.” He explained that essentially organizations want to analyze the data the minute it moves.

Aziza said that the issues for the enterprise revolve around the three “S’s”: Speed, scale and security. “It about getting information to people when they need it,” he added.
