Oracle offers up new OpenStack release as Docker instances
Oracle has updated its Oracle OpenStack platform, almost a year to the day after it first released its own flavor of the open-source cloud-building fabric.
The new release, called Oracle OpenStack for Oracle Linux Release 2, has been updated with containers in mind. Specifically, the new release has been made available packaged entirely as Docker instances, which means customers won’t have to worry about installing each of the components individually.
The challenges of configuring, integrated and managing OpenStack are a considerable obstacle in the path of its wider adoption, and with this new release Oracle is hoping it’ll be able to address some of those issues, the company said.
“Oracle OpenStack for Oracle Linux addresses current OpenStack integration challenges by providing an integrated, single-vendor solution,” said Wim Coekaerts, Oracle’s senior vice president of Linux and Virtualization Engineering. “Unlike many other vendors, Oracle can directly offer full support and address OpenStack and underlying operating system and hypervisor issues. This advantage is applicable in the OpenStack management pieces, as well as the underlying stack components.”
Oracle isn’t trying to tackle these challenges alone. Red Hat Inc., another big OpenStack player, has attempted to ease the pain in its own flavor of the software. Meanwhile, the new Liberty release integrates a new governance model known as ‘Big Tent’ that tags each OpenStack component so customers can more easily decide which pieces of the framework they need, and which ones they don’t.
Oracle’s OpenStack is based on last April’s Kilo release however, rather than the latest Liberty release. The platform includes support for new modules like Heat and Murano, and provides mission-critical Active/Active High Availability (HA), and high performance and scalability for the Keystone core identity token and policy service thanks to the inclusion of MySQL Cluster.
