Apple on Tuesday released iOS 9.1 to the general public, making it the first major update to the company’s new iOS 9 mobile operating system released in September and the third update following two minor releases: iOS 9.0.1 and iOS 9.0.2.
iOS 9.1, after going through five developer betas over the course of a month, is now available as an over-the-air update for all iOS 9 users.
On the face of it, iOS 9.1 may not look any different to users, but it does bring a number of changes under the hood.
New emoji: iOS 9.1 includes full support for Unicode 7.0 and 8.0 emojis, adding more than 150 new emoji characters to the OS. iOS is now the first operating system to include every single emoji in the Unicode Standard.
New emoji in iOS 9.1 include taco, burrito, cheese wedge, middle finger, champagne bottle, unicorn head, and more.
Live Photos update: In iOS 9.1, Live Photos now sense when an iPhone is raised or lowered to prevent it from recording unnecessary movements.
New Messages option: With iOS 9.1, users can disable photos for contacts under Messages in the Settings app.
Apple News for U.K. and Australia: After being trialed there, Apple News is now officially available in the U.K. and Australia with the release of iOS 9.1.
Fourth-gen Apple TV and iPad Pro integration: iOS 9.1 includes new features and compatibility updates for two other new Apple products: the fourth-gen Apple TV and iPad Pro, both due out soon.
Shuts down iOS 9 Pangu jailbreak: Mere days after Chinese hacking team Pangu released an iOS 9 and iOS 9.0.2 jailbreak, Apple has patched the two vulnerabilities used to engineer the jailbreak.
In addition to these changes, iOS 9.1 also includes the usual bug fixes, performance enhancements, and key security fixes.
