Nutanix Community Edition heads for the cloud

Nutanix Inc. will soon make its Community Edition software available on the the public cloud, according to reports.

The Register says Nutanix’s hyperconverged server/storage/networking systems will soon be made available on either Amazon Web Services or Google Compute Platform, though it didn’t specify any sources. Nevertheless, the website correctly asserted that Nutanix would roll out a Community Edition last February, before it was launched in beta in May. That beta will now continue to run in the cloud, the website says.

Nutanix’s software makes it simple to manage multiple virtual machines and applications atop of Hyper-V, vSphere or its own Acropolis hypervisor. Its software overlays the hypervisor, hiding it from view and also boosting its performance, with Nutanix throwing in support services on top.

For the Community Edition, The Register says it can be run on one, three or four servers packing at least four x86 cores. 200GB of flash storage and 500GB of spinning disk space are also minimum requirements for the free edition, which is primarily designed to boost Nutanix’s exposure to greater numbers of developers, students and private hobbyists. By making the Community Edition available in the cloud, that should only server to increase the exposure further.

The Register adds that the cloud-based Community Edition should provide high availability for VMs, data protection through erasure coding and a technology preview of self-service file restore from snapshots, among other features that come as standard on Nutanix’s Acropolis.
