A confluence of Dev and Ops: The innovation vibe |#LinuxCon 2015

At the recently concluded LinuxCon 2015 in Seattle, John Furrier had an opportunity to speak with Jim Zemlin, the executive director of the Linux Foundation, on theCUBE, from the SiliconANGLE Media team, to capture the vibe at the open source event.

Mainframe is still relevant

The excitement surrounding the show centers on some of the biggest industry players making a huge commitment to Linux on big mainframes. Zemlin mentioned IBM’s announcement about Linux on the Mainframe, which furthers the industry’s dedication to open source. “Mainframes are still around, said Zemlin. “They run 100 percent of all credit card transactions worldwide, making it the fastest growing market for Linux.”

Industry advancement projects

LinuxCon 2015 also brought announcements regarding the some of the foundation’s newest projects. The IO Visor Project is focusing on the advancement of networking and virtualization for the modern data center. The Kinetic Open Storage Project centers on cloud storage technologies and Zemlin mentioned the New Security-Focused Badge Program that is seeking to enhance security for open source with badges.

The innovation vibe

What did you miss if you didn’t attend? Zemlin described how the conference is bringing together developers and operations working with the most demanding infrastructure in the world, who are creating the next generation data center.

The real buzz according to Zemlin is, “How to accelerate open source, innovate further and enable open source across scale.”
