Eidos Montreal’s Deus Ex: Mankind Divided was slated for release on February 23, 2016, but now the studio has announced that the release date has been pushed back by six months to August 23.
“As you may have already seen by reading and watching the many previews for Deus Ex: Mankind Divided, our aim is for it to be a worthy successor to Human Revolution, and to improve upon that game in every way possible,” Eidos Montreal studio head David Anfossi wrote in a blog post. “I know that expectations are extremely high, and we not only want to meet those expectations, but exceed them.”
He continued, “We’re confident and proud of the game so far. However, as we are now playing through the game in full we can see that it will require more time in post-production for tuning, iterations, and refinement to meet our high standards. In order to achieve this, we need to move the release of the game to August 23rd, 2016.”
Delays are not uncommon in the video game industry, and while six months is a significant length of time, it is not necessarily an indication that the game will not live up to expectations once it finally does release. CD Projekt RED delayed the release of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt more than once during the game’s lengthy development cycle, and it went on to become the studio’s most successful game to date and received almost universal critical acclaim.
Still, delays are never good news, and the team at Eidos have already hit a few missteps with the upcoming game, especially with its extremely unpopular tiered pre-order reward system, which it eventually decided to scrap after it was heavily criticized by fans for being unnecessarily stingy with digital bonuses. Customers who pre-ordered the game are also probably not too happy about the delay, and Anfossi apologized to fans in his blog post.
“We are sorry to disappoint you with this news, and also thank you for all of your support and comments,” he said. “This game is a huge part of our lives, and we don’t want to compromise on its quality.”
