Google Photos updated to automatically free up space on your smartphone

As our connection with our smartphones is constant, they have become the go-to device when we want to take a quick photo. It is incredibly convenient to grab your phone when you see something beautiful, but what is not though is running out of space on your phone when it fills up with hundreds of photos and videos.

With the latest update of Google Photos, Google is making it easier to free up space on your smartphone so that you never have to worry that you will not have enough space for that next photo.

Once you have update Google Photos, go to Settings and with a single tap on “Free up space”, Google Photos will remove all device copies of your backed-up photos and videos. You can also customize your Google Photos settings so that it can warn you when storage is running low. You can also choose a setting for Google Photos to remove local device copies of backed up photos that are older than 30 days.

All your backed up photos and videos will be accessible on both the Google Photos app as well as on the web. At any stage, you can select to have any of your photos or videos re-downloaded to your smartphone.

The Google Photos update is rolling out now to Android (v1.9). iOS users will have to continue to manually delete photos once they have backed them up to Google Photos. However, iOS users can expect to get the updated version of Google Photos in the near future.
