Green Man Gaming will start sharing where it gets its game keys—sort of

Game key resellers have become more and more popular over the last few years thanks to their often suspiciously low prices on major game titles, and there has been an increasing demand on the part of both publishers and consumers that these resellers offer better guarantees that the keys they are selling were legitimately acquired. Green Man Gaming Ltd (GMG) is one of the most popular game key resellers, and today the site announced that it will soon start providing the source for every key it sells.

“In response to your feedback, rolling out from today on the Green Man Gaming store you’ll see our pages now have two new pieces of information,” GMG wrote in a Facebook post. “1/ When you can expect the delivery of a key [and] 2/ The source of that key. … remember that your feedback is always really important to us, and we want to keep helping you make informed decisions when shopping with us.”

The site has already started adding sources for numerous game keys, but the new information is not always thorough. In many cases, the source listed is simply the publisher of the game, but the source for many others says simply “Authorised Distributor,” which is not particularly informative.

Banned from /r/GameDeals

The announcement comes shortly after sales from GMG were banned from the /r/GameDeals community on Reddit amidst suspicions that some of the site’s keys were obtained illicitly. The ban occurred partially in response to claims made by developer CD Projekt RED that GMG had sold game keys for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt that had been obtained from an unknown source, and that that none of the revenue from those sales were going to the studio.

“We realize that a large part of our community is a big fan of Green Man Gaming and their deals,” a moderator for /r/GameDeals wrote, “but ever since it was made clear that their keys for The Witcher 3 were not coming directly from CD Projekt RED or the proper channels there has been a lingering concern about Green Man Gaming.”

The community moderators reached out to several game publishers asking if GMG is an authorized seller of their games, with several responding that the site is not an authorized partner.

At least one of these responses was incorrect, however, as Warner Bros Interactive Entertainment Inc initially claimed that GMG was not authorized, but they later retracted that statement and confirmed that GMG “is an authorized retailer for WB Games.”

GMG dismissed the demands made by /r/GameDeals on Reddit, accusing the moderators of “unsourced information” and “guesswork,” and numerous other commenters defended the game reseller, including a representative of GMG competitor Get Games Online Ltd.

“The three publishers you’ve listed, whilst staffed by good people, can be woefully inefficient when taken as an administrative whole,” the Get Game representative wrote. “Information gets lost/is incomplete. I would very much like to see what WB and Ubisoft customer service reps have to say about Get Games Go and other retailers as well.”

At this time, GMG is still banned from /r/GameDeals.
