PlayStation 4 remote play support is coming to PC and Mac

Some tech savvy PlayStation 4 owners were excited earlier this week when a third-party developer who goes by the name “Twisted” released a tool that would allow gamers to remotely play their game consoles through their PCs, and now Shuhei Yoshida, president of Sony Worldwide Studios, has said that an official remote play feature is in the works for PlayStation.

“Some people asked if we plan to provide Remote Play function to PC,” Yoshida said in a tweet, “and yes, we are indeed working on an official application for PC/Mac.”

This would be yet another feature already present on Xbox One that PlayStation is looking to replicate, but Sony doesn’t exactly need to worry about playing catch-up. The Tokyo-based company recently revealed that PlayStation 4 has already sold over 30.2 million units worldwide, and while Xbox has made major strides over the last year or so, it will have a tough time dethroning PlayStation from the top spot in this hardware generation’s console wars.

Get remote play (unofficially) without having to wait for Sony

Yoshida did not reveal anything about when the feature might first become available or what sort of requirements it might have when it arrives, so it looks like it could be some time before official remote play support is released.

If you are too impatient for that, you can try out Twisted’s unofficial remote play program, but unfortunately, it is not free. Twisted’s program currently costs 6.50 GBP (roughly $9.78 USD), and in a blog post, Twisted explained why he can’t offer it for less.

“The only way to support this is to charge for the app, all my previous projects have been free and I don’t want to have to but sadly its the only way to support my living costs,” Twisted said. “On the plus side this means I have more time to work on the project and provide support to its users, something which I’ve been limited on in the past.”

With Yoshida’s confirmation that Sony is working on its own remote play feature, it is unclear how exactly that will affect the future of Twisted’s remote play program.
