A hybrid cloud strategy that runs AWS in a private cloud | #HPEDiscover

In September 2014, HP acquired Eucalyptus Systems, Inc. to strengthen its hybrid cloud strategy and the adoption of hybrid cloud among enterprise clients. Folded into the Helion product portfolio, Eucalyptus makes it easier to replicate an Amazon Web Services-type cloud in a private environment.

Colby Dyess, director of marketing for HPE Helion Eucalyptus, joined John Furrier and Dave Vellante, cohosts of theCUBE, from the SiliconANGLE Media team, during HPE Discover 2015 — London to discuss Eucalyptus’ position in the new HPE family.

Lots of clouds — Lots of choices

Acknowledging that customers have a wide variety of cloud choices to choose from, Dyess said, “There is no other private cloud solution for Amazon other than Eucalyptus. It’s great because we can focus on just implementing the AWS APIs.”

HPE is now in a position to offer private and public cloud opportunities through Eucalyptus and its relationship with Microsoft. “The partnership is going to make it easier for you to put things into Azure and out of Azure,” Dyess stated. “It makes it easier because you get the HP gear, you get the Microsoft relationship, and now you can work with one vendor to get your public and private cloud.”

Open source foundation

When asked about how HPE’s relationship with OpenStack, Dyess said, “OpenStack will be the primary cloud platform for HPE. The company will continue to invest in OpenStack.” However, OpenStack and Eucalyptus do not complement each other, as they are two different models. According to Dyess, Eucalyptus is an open-source implementation of the AWS core service; it is a fully formed software product.

As the enterprise group moves forward, HPE will be tackling the complexities of moving the enterprise to the cloud through various solutions. Currently, customers feel the need to run cloud services on premise, and with Eucalyptus, they have all the benefits of AWS on a private platform.
