Facebook rolling out Live video to all, launches photo and video collages

Facebook has announced that it is rolling out their streaming video broadcast feature, Live, to all users, inside its Facebook app. Facebook first introduced Live four months ago, but it was a feature reserved for celebrities and other high-profile users.

In addition to live video, Facebook is also rolling out a new way to share photos and videos in a new tile format called Collage. Both new features are aiming to “help friends and family feel like they’re in the moment with you,” according to Facebook product managers Vadim Lavrusik and Thai Tran.

How to use Facebook’s Live video streaming

To get started, tap on Update Status and choose the Live Video icon. Write a short description about your upcoming video as well as the audience who will get to see your video. While your video is streaming you’ll be able to see which of your friends are tuning in, the number of live viewers and any real-time comments. Unless you choose to delete it, the video automatically saves onto your Facebook Timeline.

Any videos from your friends or public figures that you follow will show in your News Feed. If you are enjoying a live video that you are watching, just hit the subscribe button and be alerted the next time there is a new video being broadcast.

Rolling out of the Live video feature is starting today, December 3, to a small percentage of iPhone users in the U.S., but don’t be deterred if you don’t fall into this group as Facebook plans to roll out the feature to everyone over time.

The Collage feature allows you to group photos and videos into a tiled, moving collage from a single moment that you can then share with your friends and family.

Tapping on Photo will show you your recent photos and videos organized into collages, based on where and when you took them. Edit your collage by removing, adding or re-arranging your videos and photos. You can also resize the different tiles to make certain photos or videos more prominent. Add a title to your collage and you are ready to share it with your loved ones.

If you are an Android user, you are going to have to wait until early next year for this new feature. While iPhone users can get started creating their collages today.
