Bigger is better: Twitter won’t crop your photos

A month ago, we saw Twitter Inc. dump the ability to favorite a Tweet with a star in favor of liking a Tweet in the form of a heart icon. A seemingly minor change that prompted a major outcry. Now Twitter’s latest announcement will change the way photos are displayed on the social media platform, a change that will unlikely receive the same response as the heart, but who knows what the Tweeters out there will think.

“While Twitter began as an all-text platform, rich media has become essential to the experience,” said product manager Akarshan Kumar and hence the latest updates to Twitter to provide users with a more enhanced photo experience.

No more cropped photos

Twitter - uncropped photos

If you are a regular tweeter of photos, you will be happy to know that Twitter will no longer be cropping your photos. Prior to the update, Twitter used to crop your photos randomly, leaving you with a headless person or a beach scene that was less desirable than the original photo. Landscape images and smaller, square photos will be displayed uncropped but, sadly, if you are tweeting a large portrait image Twitter will continue to crop your photo.

Multiple photo displays get a refresh

Twitter - multiple photo display

In addition to your photos remaining uncropped, Twitter is also updating the way it displays tweets that have multiple photos uploaded. Similar to how Facebook displays multiple photos on your Timeline, Twitter will now show a preview that favors one main image while the other three images remain smaller. Rather than four small images, at least you get one image that is bigger than the rest.

The updates to the displaying of photographs have already rolled out and you can start enjoying them in your feed.
