Apple TV apps gaining in popularity, now over 2,600 apps in the app store

With the release of Apple’s Best of App Store list for 2015 we saw that the best apps on Apple TV were claimed by HBO Now, followed by Zova – Personal Trainer and Kitchen Stories. While on the game side, Rayman Adventures, Lumino City and Beat Sports claimed the top three spots.

App and game popularity on Apple TV has definitely increased and there are now over 2,600 apps on Apple TV according to data compiled by appFigures, with developers adding an average of 447 apps each week. Apple TV is proving to be a popular platform for app developers with appFigures estimating that there will be a steady growth rate. The estimated figure will hit 5,000 in a month, with apps on Apple TV hitting 10,000 by early 2016.

Eddy Cue, Apple’s SVP of internet software and services confirmed to BuzzFeed News that there are already over 2,000 apps live in the store for Apple TV.

The data from appFigures  shows that the largest category of apps for Apple TV are games, making up 38 percent of the apps available for Apple TV. Entertainment and education apps follow in second and third spot.

When it comes to the split between paid vs. free apps, 39 percent of the apps on Apple TV are paid apps, with the majority costing $2.99 or less.

Games may contribute as the biggest percentage when it comes to the apps available on Apple TV, but when it comes to what users are actually downloading it is entertainment apps that come out tops. Entertainment apps claim all top 10 spots for what viewers are downloading, including the likes of streaming services Netflix and Hulu. They also go on to gain a further 18 spots out of the top 50 proving that entertainment is definitely the area Apple TV users are most interested in at the moment.
