5 connected gifts even your grandparents can use | #TechGiftGuides2015
Some grandparents aren’t keen on learning the latest technology. Let’s face it, if they could have it their way, phones would still have buttons, not touchscreens and confusing apps. But that doesn’t mean you can’t give Grandpa and Grandma some useful tech gifts this Christmas. You just have to be a bit creative.
Check out the following five gift ideas for Grandpa and Grandma this holiday season:
Digital photo frames
Grandmas love looking at and sharing old photos. To make her photo collection interesting, turn any print photos into a digital ones and put them in a digital photo frame. This way, multiple photos can be displayed in a single frame. The NIX Digital Photo Frame allows anyone to display photos, watch videos and even listen to music. The device has a sensor that allows it to turn on when someone enters the room and turn off when no one is in the room, thereby saving energy.
The NIX Digital Photo Frame is available for $59.99.
Tablet
Although some may argue that grandparents won’t be interested in using a tablet, if you tell them they could use it to video call their grandkids and show them how to do it, I’m sure they’d be happy to learn how to use it. Right now, Amazon.com is offering its 7” Kindle Fire for only $49.99. Not a bad price to pay in case they don’t use it much.
Plus, it also provides a great entertainment hub with millions of books, movies, apps, games and shows available for them any time.
Bluetooth tracker
Do your grandparents tend to lose things like keys to the house? Then give them a Bluetooth tracker like Tile, which can be attached to keys, bags, purses and pets, and with the aid of a smartphone, the user will never have to lose or misplace an item again. It alerts the user when their smartphone gets separated from a Tile. And there is a community of users to help find lost items; plus the Tile can be used to locate a smartphone.
To use a Tile, they must have a smartphone. Tile’s price starts at $25.
Security camera
We’d like to visit our grandparents and check in on them as often as possible, but with school or work, schedules can prevent this. To keep an eye on them, give them a security camera, such as Canary. It’s pretty easy to set up and pair with your own smartphone so you can check on them 24/7. It has motion sensors so users can set it to only record videos when movement is detected, or users can view a live stream. Also, the night vision feature allows users to see what’s happening when it gets dark, and the device monitors air quality, humidity and temperature. Plus, high quality audio accompanies the video.
And the best part? Grandparents don’t have to do anything because you control Canary using your smartphone. The Canary sells for $199.
Blood pressure monitor
If you got your grandparent to use a smartphone, a good companion is the Withings Wireless Blood Pressure Monitor. It is medically approved and easy to use. Just download the Health Mate app on any smartphone, and when they wear the cuff and turn it on, it automatically launches the app. Users get a few quick instructions to set everything up so the cuff will be ready to take their blood pressure.
Users will get an instant color-coded readings, can sync readings with the Withings Health Cloud and create an easy-to-understand chart. Charts can be shared with doctors for continuous care.
The Withings Wireless Blood Pressure Monitor sells for $129.95.
