iPhones, iPads made up 49% of all mobile gifts this Christmas, says report

Apparently, a large percentage of people were unwrapping Apple devices this holiday season, with Apple iPhones and iPads comprising of 49.1 percent of new device activations.

In a report released by Yahoo-owned analytics firm, Flurry, Apple has once again enjoyed a significant lead in new device activations over the week of December 19 to December 25.

Flurry - Device activations

Apple did lose 2.2 percent of new device activations since last year, with that percentage going to runner-up Samsung Electronics Co. who grabbed 19.8 percent of new device activations, up by 2.1 percent from last year.

Microsoft’s Nokia dropped from 5.8 percent in 2014, to 2 percent this year, with LG Electronics Inc. claiming 1.7 percent of new device activations. Sony Corp. has fallen out of the top five, but surprisingly Xiaomi Inc. makes an appearance in fifth spot and claims 1.5 percent of new device activations, which Flurry found surprising considering Christmas in China is not the biggest gift-giving time of the year.

Flurry - Distribution of new devices

The Flurry report also shows how phablets are more popular than ever before. In 2013, only 4 percent of new device activations were phablets in the week leading up to Christmas. This percentage has grown to 27 percent, an increase of more than double compared to 2014.

Full-size tablets and small tablets have dropped a further 2 percent this year and each accounts for just 9 percent of new device activations. Medium phones have also seen a drop of 9 percent from last year’s 63 percent while small phones with a screen size less than 3.5 inches made up just 1 percent of new device activations.

Flurry - Distibution of devices by form factor and OS

The popularity of phablets is even greater for Android, with phablets accounting for more than half of all Android devices, due to the popularity of the Samsung Galaxy Note and others, especially in Asian markets.

With more consumers opting for a phablet at the expense of a medium phone or small tablet, Apple’s phablet has obtained a 12 percent share of all Apple devices activated during Christmas week.

Flurry - app downloads

After unwrapping their devices, consumers headed to the app stores and once again Christmas Day accounted for the biggest day for app downloads. Flurry tracked 2.2x as many app installs on Christmas Day compared to an average day in December.
