EA exec may have accidentally revealed how many Xbox One consoles have been sold
Microsoft has been increasingly vague about the number of Xbox One units have been sold since the console started lagging behind PlayStation, but a statement made by Electronic Arts Inc CFO Blake Jorgensen during a recent earnings called suggests that the figure may be around 19 million, a little more than half the total number of PlayStation 4 consoles that have been sold.
“I think our business seems to be operating pretty consistent as it has been over the last couple of years,” Jorgensen said during the earnings call (via Eurogamer). “The console purchases are up through the end of calendar year ’15.”
“Our estimate is 55 million units out there which has exceeded virtually everyone’s forecast for the year and now almost 50 per cent higher than previous console cycle so, all of that is very-very positive, all the gameplay we’re seeing and the engagement and things like Ultimate Team we’re seeing is positive.”
Sony Corp already revealed recently that PlayStation 4 had sold over 35.9 million units, and since EA announced last year that it would not be developing games for Nintendo Wii U, that means that Xbox One’s numbers are somewhere around 19 million.
This likely explains why Microsoft announced last year that it would no longer be revealing hardware sales figures for Xbox One, saying that it would instead focus on other metrics, such as the total number of active Xbox Live users. According to figures released in Microsoft’s earnings call this week, that number now seems to be around 48 million, which includes both Xbox One and Xbox 360 users.
While PlayStation leads Xbox in terms of sales by a large margin worldwide, the market share between the two devices varies by country. In the US and Canada, the matchup is a little more equal, but overseas, the PlayStation holds an overwhelming majority of the market.
Earlier last year, Jim Ryan, president of Sony Computer Entertainment Europe, said that in several countries throughout Europe, PlayStation holds as much as 90 percent or more of the total console market.
