IoT healing heart disease, almost as smart as a doctor

People with hypertension no longer need to rush to their doctors thanks to a new service available on their mobile device.

February is known in the medical industry as Heart Month, and this year, Withings SA is raising awareness with a special offering.

Withings has launched Hy-Result, a sophisticated advisory algorithm developed by hypertension specialists from Hospital Georges Pompidou in Paris, under the leadership of Dr. Postel-Vinay.

Hy-Result helps people interpret and assess personalized interventions that can aid in the better management of high blood pressure. It combines the professional advisory protocols laid down by the European Society of Hypertension with scientific data on the management of blood pressure.

Hy-Result intelligently analyzes blood pressure data from in-home monitors such as the Withings Wireless Blood Pressure Monitor, and provides actionable interventions based on a person’s medical data, lifestyle factors, and physical statistics.

“With cardiovascular disease being the leading global cause of death, accounting for 17.3 million deaths per year, everyday monitoring blood pressure becomes an increasingly important part of anyone’s healthy lifestyle,” said Withings CEO and co-founder Cedric Hutchings. “We are very proud to offer Hy-Result, which further delivers on the Withings mission to provide connected health services that are rooted in science and clinically proven to make positive impacts on health and wellbeing.”

It’s clinically proven

Before being adopted by Withings, Hy-REsult has been validated in a head-to-head clinical trial that compares its recommendations with those of hypertension specialists. In a study published in November 2015, it was determined that recommendations offered by Hy-Result delivered the same advice as specialist physicians 95.4 percent of the time, making it at least as accurate as that of a specialist in current practice.

Despite the high percentage of accuracy, Hy-Result is not intended as replacement for professional consultations with cardiologists and general practitioners, but can be trusted to be used by patients and caregivers between doctor visits.

Further evidence to back Hy-Result is an 18-month study with the American Medical Group Foundation which revealed that connected technology helps people control high blood pressure. The study found that patients were able to better control their high blood pressure using an at-home monitoring tool like the Withings Wireless Blood Pressure Monitor, with control rates improving from 38.6 percent to 70 percent.

How it works

Hy-Result combines blood pressure data with information gathered from the individual user to determine intervention that will deliver the best results. It asks the user a number of questions regarding their lifestyle, medications, medical history, and personal stats to get a clear picture of health. For five days, the user sets a reminder to take blood pressure readings six times a day – three in the morning, three in the evening – which can be done using the Withings Wireless Blood Pressure Monitor or any blood pressure monitoring device, as the data can be entered manually into the app. Blood pressure readings vary, thus the need for numerous readings to be able to establish a baseline for comparison.

From this, the protocol will provide users with personalized assessments of their cardiovascular health and identify strategies for preventive measures to heart health risks and better management of high blood pressure. Results can then be shared with their physicians using a secure PDF report and further actions can then be implemented if needed.

Availability

Hy-Result can be purchased for $4.99 in the Withings Health Mate application available for iOS starting this month. The service is available in the U.S., Canada, U.K. and France, in French and English.
