Twitchcon 2016 adds an extra day and moves to San Diego

Last year, Amazon-owned livestreaming service Twitch held the first ever Twitchcon in San Francisco, California, and the event was a huge success, with over 20,000 people attending. Twitch announced today that Twitchcon will be returning this year, but there will be a few changes to the event.

The biggest change is that Twitchcon will be moving about 500 miles to the south to the San Diego Convention Center, the same location where San Diego Comic Con is held.

“We wanted to explore other locations, yet still remain close enough to our home base of San Francisco given all of the staff that will be attending the event,” Amy Brady, director of global events for Twitch, told Polygon. Brady explained one of the reasons Twitch chose San Diego specifically is because of the city’s experience already hosting major fan events (i.e. Comic Con).

Brady said that Twitch has not decided to make San Diego Twitchcon’s permanent home, saying, “We plan TwitchCon one year at a time, so you never know.”

In addition to moving 500 miles away, Twitchcon will also be extended an extra day, turning the convention into a three-day event. The officially announced dates for Twitchcon 2016 run from September 30 through October 2.

So far, there are few other details for what Twitch has in store of this year’s Twitchcon, but the company said on its blog that it will have to announce in the near future.

On its blog, Twitch described the activities for Twitchcon 2016 as “Games, panels, education, meet & greets, meetups, live shows, music, merchandise (no, really this time), and so much more!”
