Hungry market gobbles up flash storage | #DataStorage

Data storage technology is the unsung hero of the Big Data revolution. Without a way to store, manage and serve up vast amounts of information on demand, Big Data would be far more theory than practice. Serving up data has become especially important, with speed being the major selling point of new data storage solutions. Flash storage has met the demand for speed, and several companies have risen to provide flash storage to a hungry market. Nimble Storage is one of these companies.

To shed some light on Nimble Storage and its market, Jeff Frick and Stu Miniman, cohosts of theCUBE, from the SiliconANGLE Media team, joined Stephen Foskett, organizer in chief of Tech Field Day, curing the Nimble Storage: The Power of Predictive Analytics event.

Finding a place in the market

The discussion started with a look at Nimble’s place in the field of flash storage. Foskett replied that Nimble is in an interesting position because it is an execution machine. It has put a considerable sales force and support network on the ground, letting them reach customers. A key component of Nimble’s success, Foskett said, is InfoSight, a Big Data app to assist the company with supporting its systems.

As concerns with the broader IT space, Foskett was direct. “Nimble is very much in the enterprise, in the datacenter,” he said. Producing a product for mainstream consumption is an unusual place for a new company, he continued, but recent trends have opened an opportunity for someone to come in and grab market share.

A reputation in the community

A business can’t come to market with a product that isn’t the right product, Foskett said. Enterprise wants support, features and performance, he explained. The challenge for Nimble is to live up to its reputation.

The community, in general, is looking toward the future, however. Foskett stated that he’d like to see real engineering and innovative approaches to solid-state storage. He did like, however, how InfoSight was enabling Nimble to create and support a better storage array for customers.
