What does the rise of mobile mean for the enterprise? | #IBMInterConnect

Mobile has completely upended consumer products. The majority of individuals in the United States own a smartphone. We can find mobile technology in our watch, television, car, even our thermostat. What does this mean for the enterprise?

IBM Institute for Business Value aims to find out. “For the enterprise, mobile can help employees be more substantially effective in their jobs,” said Michael Gilfix, VP of MobileFirst product management at IBM. “Mobile helps employees make intelligent decisions in their day to day; and, therefore, they are more productive.”

Gilfix joined John Furrier and Dave Vellante, cohosts of theCUBE, from the SiliconANGLE Media team, during IBM InterConnect 2016. Also joining them was Pete Teigen, mobile leader, IBM Institute for Business Value.

Addressing ROI of mobile for the enterprise

Vellante asked Teigen what IBM’s research arm has been looking at in the mobile space. Its latest project, Teigen explained, addressed the ROI of mobile for the enterprise. “Few people really see the value that mobile can bring,” Teigen said. “There is still a lot of uncaptured value, which is what drove our latest study.”

To compile the data, IBM Institute for Business Value interviewed C-suite executives and other business leaders. “We noticed that the high-performing groups focused on the top line rather than just cost-cutting,” Teigen explained. “Many people also didn’t understand the importance of reaching across lines of business, which allows you to scale up projects. About 40 percent of those surveyed admitted they pursue projects ad hoc.”
